(21 dic. 1773, Montrose, Angus, Escocia.–10 jun. 1858, Londres, Inglaterra) Botánico escocés.

Hijo de un clérigo, estudió medicina en Aberdeen y Edinburgo, posteriormente entró al ejército británico como portaestandarte y cirujano asistente (1795). Obtuvo el cargo de naturalista abordo de un barco destinado a hacer un estudio topográfico de las costas australianas (1801), durante el viaje recolectó cerca de 3.900 especies de plantas. Publicó parte de los resultados de su viaje en 1810 en su clásico Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae..., que sentó las bases de la botánica australiana y refinó los sistemas imperantes de clasificación de plantas. En 1827 traspasó la colección botánica de Joseph Banks al Museo Británico y pasó a ser el encargado del departamento de botánica recién formado. Al año siguiente publicó sus observaciones sobre el fenómeno que sería llamado movimiento browniano. En 1831 descubrió la existencia del núcleo en la célula vegetal. Fue el primero en reconocer la distinción entre gimnospermas y angiospermas (plantas con flor).
